Embedding long term learning with Retrieval Practice

With the linear GCSE and A Level examinations now firmly established within the secondary school landscape, the benefits of retrieval practice are being widely recognised. Many are now advocating the deliberate use of low-stakes testing within lessons in order to establish and deepen students learning within their long term memories. Encouraging students to delve into the long term memory in order to retrieve information helps them to embed this knowledge more deeply and ensure that they are more able to retrieve this information rapidly in the future. Consequently, fluency with key concepts and ideas is also increased which means that student should be more able to apply their knowledge to new situations.
